Class Syllabus
Hello! Welcome to 7th Grade Science Class. This year is going to be all about investigating the world around us and learning to explain how and why things work the way they do. In addition, we will be incorporating engineering and design into the classroom so that we can not only define problems, but also think creatively about solutions.
I, as your teacher, will do my best to make the lessons engaging and explain things in a variety of ways. I will ensure I meet the needs of my hands-on, verbal, and visual learners. I will have a sense of humor and I try my best to communicate with students clearly and make my expectations known. Homework will consist of students finishing their classwork if they don’t in class and studying for quizzes or tests.
You, as the students, will strive to put forward your best effort, complete assignments on time, listen carefully to me and each other, ask questions and speak up when you need help, and participate in class. We will all be respectful, kind, and patient with one another. You will try to stay organized, respect the lab equipment, follow directions, try your best, and be responsible. If we all behave as we have agreed in this statement, we will surely have a successful year!
In the event that misbehavior occurs, I will give a warning, talk to the student one-on-one, give the behavior reflection assignment, then contact your guardian. If the behavior threatens the safety of other students or yourself, you may lose laboratory privileges and you may have to come at break or lunch to help you practice the correct behavior.
Class Rules and Expectations
Excused Absences - If you are able, please check the class website for what you missed (salterscienceclass.weebly.com) or call/text/email your study buddy. If you are ill and cannot work at home, you have as many days as you were absent to make up the work. If you need to make up a lab, make an appointment with me and bring a friend to help you.
Tardy Policy - 1 tardy results in talking with me about why you were late. 2 tardies result in break detention. I need you to make up the time in class you missed by arriving late. 3 tardies in the same quarter will result in both detention and contact with a parent. 4 tardies will result in a referral to your counselor.
Late Work - Late assignments will lose 10% for each day they are late (unless you have an excused absence or have asked for an extension BEFORE the due date).
No Backpacks - Backpacks in our small lab are a safety hazard. Please leave them in your locker. The only materials you will need are something to write with, your science journal, and your planner (optional).
No Food - Because we will occasionally be working with toxic chemicals and because we have some very serious allergies in our class, please do not bring food into the lab. Water (in a no-spill container) is always ok.
Grades- As you collect points over the unit/quarter/semester, you will be given a letter grade based on the percentage of points you have earned out of the total points possible:
100% or more = A+
93-99 = A
90-92 = A-
87-89 = B+
83-86 = B
80-82 = B-
77-79 = C+
73-76 = C
70-72 = C-
67-69 = D+
63-66 = D
60-62 = D-Below 60% = F
Extra Credit - Extra credit can be earned at any time in a variety of ways, although it will never be assigned. If you have the desire to improve your grade, think of a way you can express your understanding outside of the work you have done in class. Please remember that I must approve your idea BEFORE you get started!
Keep track of your grade! I will update Aeries weekly so that you and your families may watch as your scores soar higher and higher!
If you or your family have any questions or comments or want to check in at any time for any reason at all, please contact me! Email is usually the most effective way for me to communicate. Talk to you soon!
